AI-PHOQUS Project Gets Underway

AI-PHOQUS (Artificial Intelligence and advanced networks embedded in PHOtonics and QUantum Sciences and Technology), the project that combines artificial intelligence, photonics, and quantum technologies, officially launched on June 1, 2026. It received funding of €29,700,000 under the “PN Research, Innovation and Competitiveness for the Green and Digital Transition 2021–2027” (PN RIC 2021-2027) (Public Notice MUR no. 310 of March 18, 2025 – Action 1.1.1).
By progressively integrating AI and quantum technologies based on atoms and photons with the photonics, manufacturing, and advanced networking sectors, AI-PHOQUS creates a multidisciplinary infrastructure that fosters collaboration between public and private entities and the development of new services and technologies for the benefit of both the scientific community and businesses, with strategic applications in the fields of health, industry, energy, and the environment.
The core of the project is the strengthening of the LENS research infrastructure, internationally recognized for its excellence in photonics, its applications, and quantum science and technology, through the construction of three potential new nodes in Naples, Lecce, and Messina.
The strengthening involves the synergistic contribution of other infrastructures: I-PHOQS (a network created within the PNRR by the LENS, CUSBO, BeyondNano, and ELI research institutes) for photonics and QT expertise; SoBigData (an ESFRI research institute strengthened by the PNRR) for big data management and the creation of AI systems with a focus on open science and ethical data use; SLICES (ESFRI research institute), which supports the evolution of the internet, including the integration of classical and quantum networks; and EUAPS (an research institute created with the PNRR) for high-energy laser sources.

In this way, AI-PHOQUS intends to contribute to the country’s economic development and technological innovation, with particular attention to the growth and strengthening of research infrastructures in Southern Italy.

AI-PHOQUS involves a broad national partnership: CNR, IMT Alti Studi Lucca, University of Messina, Polytechnic University of Milan, University of L’Aquila, University of Pisa, University of Genoa, Scuola Normale Superiore, University of Palermo, University of Rome “La Sapienza”, University of Catania, and University of Bologna.
